Nirvana‘s Unplugged concert recorded on November 18th, 1993, is often thought of as the band’s final show, but not true not true. Nirvana played another month in the US and then went on to Eurpoe.
Courtney Love did not fly out to Europe for that part of the tour and the couple spent their two year wedding anniversary separated buy the Atlantic which lead to reports they were going through rough times. Kurt looked increasingly awful (sickly) as the tour went on, and his voice soon gave out on him. Doctors diagnosed him with bronchitis and a laryngitis and urged him to take a long break, but he ignored their advice and played on.
The actual final show the band did was in Munich on March 1st, 1994 in an airplane hanger that fit 3,050 people. it apparently sounded terrible in there plus Kurt was struggling with a missing voice. They opened with a "F- You" version of “My Best Friend’s Girl” by the Cars and then had to start “Come as You Are” twice after the power went out. Safe to say this concert was a shit show. But not knowing then that this would be Kurt and Nirvana's final performance, fans like me are grateful cameras were rolling at least for the first few songs. Then this video surfaced of the final song Kurt would ever sing... It was the final song of that show's encore "Heart Shaped Box". Which makes me weep all on it's own, and now even more so in this context.
It’s painful to hear him struggle to hit the high notes on the “hey wait” part of the chorus and later in the song he gives up and delivers it in a deep voice.
so today is an un-happy anniversary of sorts as it was 25 years ago today when Kurt Cobain performed his final song in public. Here is “Heart-Shaped Box” in Munich, Germany, on March 1st, 1994:
