The 1975 singer Matty Healy explains the lyrics from their latest single "Love It If We Made It" line by line to the music annotation site.
When I wrote about its music video a few weeks ago, I compared "Love It If We Made It" to Billy Joel's historical catalogue "We Didn't Start The Fire". Turns out Healy was actually paying homage to Prince. The Purple One mixed observations with social commentary on "Sign O' The Times" over 30 years ago. Fits better than my Billy Joel analogy and I learned something, too.
That's what I love about Genius. We get moments with our favorite artists AND we learn things. For instance, Matty Healy is wicked smart. He packed so many references and messages into "Love It If We Made It". Syrian refugees, Black Lives Matter, 'Alternative Facts', Donald Trump, polarized political realities - he covers a ton of ground. That the song feels relatively brief and concise is a credit to his lyrical skill. And that's what I love about The 1975.
The 1975 will play Agganis Arena on May 30. Win tickets to the SOLD OUT concert here.
