The Smashing Pumpkins frontman dropped a knowledge bomb during an Instagram Q&A.
So Billy Corgan regularly answers fan questions through Instagram stories at @williampcorgan. His responses seem very unfiltered, so tapping through can be an enlightening exercise whether you're a Pumpkins fan or someone who just enjoys reading what famous artists think.
Anyhow, one fan asked Billy, "Have you ever seen the hit movie Shrek?" Billy responded with some obscure Smashing Pumpkins trivia:
SP fact: we were offered the end credit song for Shrek 1 but the offer was withdrawn and given to Smashmouth (who had hit with Monkees song)
Corgan later added that he would have submitted "Untitled" for the film. Of course, he released that song anyway just prior to the band's initial breakup in 2000.
Now, the Internet sometimes acts like a bad game of telephone. So people run with the implication that Smashing Pumpkins were asked FIRST. And maybe Smash Mouth - who were already well known by the time Shrek came calling - wouldn't have had this opportunity otherwise? Either way, the controversy reached Smash Mouth and they responded:
@josiahhughes Actually we said no and Michael Austin from Dreamworks kept calling. That went on for over a month. We assume multiple bands we're asked. If it feeds Billy's ego to think they we're first let him think that. Def would have been a darker approach. @THE_EELS are on it & others.
So now Smash Mouth has beef with Billy Corgan about Shrek. What a world we live in. And how different would the end of Shrek had been!
