Not too many songs get their place in rock history for having a marked date and time when it was first played live, then there's "Smells like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana.
A genre defining band with an anthem for a generation (mine and perhaps yours?). The video footage isn't great because 1991 was a freaking long time ago now. No smart phones, people. This crowd had no idea history was being made, and they didn't know the words yet.
Here's Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" as seen and heard for the first time live on April 17th, 1991 at the OK Hotel in Seattle, Washington (where else would it be?) 😉
Gotta love how just after Kurt announces what song they are about to play, some guy in the crowd yells "Freebird!"
Haha. No. This ain't no stinkin' Freebird.
I love this day.
Nirvana performing an early version of Smells Like Teen Spirit for the first time on 4/17/91. Remixed Video/50fps option. For reference the Nevermind album was released on September 24, 1991. This performance took place at the O.K. Hotel in Seattle, WA. I'm always looking for uncirculated Nirvana Video/Audio.
