Chris Cornell's Last Song Of His Life Was About Death - Amy Brooks

In my time of dying I want nobody to mourn, All I want for you to do is take my body home

The words of the lyrics to Led Zeppelin's "In My Time Of Dying" which was the song Chris Cornell sang as his final farewell to the world Wednesday night May 17th in Detroit.  And it was no accident.  This was no sudden early death.  And in fact we only just learned as I am writing this, that the cause of his untimely death was indeed...self inflicted. Death by hanging.  He killed himself.

So now, we are left with the eerie and truly unthinkable fact that Chris Cornell, a father of 3 children (2 of which were under 14)  sang that song to say good-bye.  Knowing he was never coming back to sing another song. Oh my heart. I simply can't take any more ache.

Soundgarden has done that song before however, so there certainly wasn't any alert, or cause for concern.  But here is an interesting tid-bit.  The set list written and displayed on the floor of Detroit's Fox Theater stage, was different than what the band actually played.  In other words it didn't include that sad and now poignant Led Zeppelin song.  Again, not cause for alarm as bands make changes.  But that's an eerie change in hindsight, to say the least.

So now we reflect. All we can do is marvel in his greatness, obviously greatness he didn't see in himself.

I have re-read the review I wrote back in October of 2015 when I saw Chris solo at Boston's Shubert Theater. After meeting him during soundcheck and being told by his manager "no pictures" I asked for one anyway and he gracefully accepted.  I was beyond excited and was just happy I didn't blink!  If you care to stroll down memory lane with me please read it HERE.  It's surreal to read now I must say.

But watching and listening in wonder and amazement at his talent and musicianship, and oh that voice. That VOICE.  Something that struck me then and strikes me even more now, was watching 2 of his kids pre-show running around the venue and on the stage.  He seemed to have it all.  But proof my friend, that things aren't always what they seem.

RIP the beautiful and talented Chris Cornell.  We hope you have found peace.
