Chad Smith On His New Hosting Gig

Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith comes to TV tonight (January 20) as the host of Great Performances: Landmarks Live In Concert, a new PBS music and travel series that features artists performing in locales that have meaning for them.

The debut episode airs at 9 p.m. ET with Alicia Keys in New York, while country star Brad Paisley plays in West Virginia on January 27. The full season will get underway in June with episodes featuring StingAndrea Bocelli and possibly the Chili Peppers.

Smith tells us that being an artist himself helps make the show's subjects a little more comfortable talking for the camera:

"It was easy; I just ask them simple questions and let them go...I think it's going to be an interesting premise...When they're talking to a so-called journalist, maybe, their guard's up a little bit, or they're not maybe as comfortable as when they can talk to somebody who's a fellow artist who's there, who's doing what they do. So that's kind of the connection I have. It makes it a little easier for me."

Smith is currently on tour with the Chili Peppers in North America, supporting the group's 2016 album The Getaway.
