9 Best MUSE Songs Of All Time

MUSE is bringing their ‘Drones’ World Tour to Boston this Monday and in anticipation, here are the 9 best MUSE songs. -  Jason Rossi

First off, I am a supermassive MUSE fan, but for those who aren’t; who is MUSE? MUSE is a 3 piece English rock band that consists of Matt Bellamy (lead vocals, guitar, piano, and keyboards), Chris Wolstenholme (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Dominic Howard (drums, percussion, synthesisers). They are known for their over the top and eccentric live shows.

Here are their top 9 songs(with a few twists):

  1. "Supermassive Black Hole"

A MUSE  "classic.” Matt Bellamy said that the song was "the most different to anything we've ever done." that "these groups were the first to mix R&B rhythms with alternative guitar. We've added a bit of Prince and Kanye West. The drumbeat isn't rocky, with Rage Against the Machine riffs underneath. We’ve mixed a lot of things in this track, with a bit of electronica; it’s different, slow, quite funky."

In an interview with NME, Bellamy said "I was going out dancing in clubs around New York. That helped create tracks like 'Supermassive Black Hole'. Franz Ferdinand would have done it very well, with that dance type beat going on mixed with alternative guitar and I've always wanted to find that

  1. "Revolt"

I hate when people think a bands older music is their best, remember this is MUSE not Coldplay. In this heroic chapter in the Drones album, Bellamy exclaims “You've got strength You've got soul” that can motivate even the most sluggish of people, and with the licks during the bridge (some of the bands best work) makes this track the best off of Drones.

  1. "Plug In Baby"

During MUSE’s straight rock era (Showbiz,Origin of Symmetry,Absolution) Plug In Baby’ could be considered one of the best rock tracks. "Plug In Baby" was featured on the live albumsHullabaloo Soundtrack and HAARP. The opening riff was voted the the #1 ultimate guitar riff of the 2000s.6. "Falling Away with You"

MUSE’s specialties: rock yo badd azz off songs, dramatic opera- esque delivered songs, A-MAZ-ING live show, and tug on your heart strings ballads. Of the latter  "Falling Away with You"  is their best (not without high competition).  With beautifully written lyrics

“All of the love we left behind
Watching the flash backs intertwine
Memories I will never find”

… who is cutting the onions? … STOP.

  1. "Starlight"

The beginning of MUSE’s modern glam-rock era This song kicks you in the face as soon as it starts. You can’t hear this song without wanting to hold someone in your arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrms …

  1. "Knights of Cydonia”

A futuristic- psychedelic journey, which is based on the theory of teaching people to stand up for themselves and creating your own destiny.  "Knights of Cydonia” also features the greatest line evah written (by MUSE)

“Don't waste your time
Or time will waste you”

  1. "Time Is Running Out"

The song that gave MUSE a name in the states, and their easiest to digest rock track (aka if you need to give someone a track from MUSE this is the one). The closing crescendo like a bag of popcorn ... keeps you wanting more.

    2. "Stockholm Syndrome"

"Stockholm Syndrome" is MUSE’s darkest song, as it take the perspective of the abuser, rather than victim's perspective.

Stockholm Syndrome is a psychological response sometimes seen in an abducted hostage, in which the hostage shows signs of loyalty to the hostage-taker, regardless of the danger.

The syndrome is named after the Norrmalmstorg robbery of Kreditbanken at Norrmalmstorg, Stockholm, Sweden, in which the bank robbers held bank employees hostage and the victims became emotionally attached to their victimisers, and even defended their captors after they were freed from their six-day ordeal.

Bonus "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" Frankie Valli Cover

MUSE has some amazing covers (ex: I’m Feeling Good, but "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" is just prefect for a live show and matches Matt Bellamy’s vocal range and depth.

  1. "Uprising" & "Hysteria"

WHAT!?! Two #1s …yep that right we have a screwy finish to the best of MUSE, get over it ... did i mention I appreciate  you reading my article?
These 2 tracks are takes the best of MUSE.  "Hysteria" is in it’s own category of pop metal and is a known fan favorite. The song takes you on a high-speed rollercoaster, that starts with the cranking upwards and the release of pure adrenaline.   "Uprising" is another conspiracy/apocalypse track, but with a lot of hope tied in. Lyrics like

“They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious”

The band produced this song themselves, and was #1 on the alternative charts in the U.S.for  17 weeks (good for 3rd all time)

Thoughts on the list, do you agree, disagree, hate me for making it?
