Why I Love Frances McDormand - Amy Brooks

If the spirited, interesting, crazy-eyed, talented, carefree, short-haired, makeup-less, no frills Frances McDormand hasn't won you over with last night's powerful best actress Oscar acceptance speech for her blistering performance in "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri" then well, you must be dead inside. (kidding-sort of).

First, the reaction to her Oscar win was fantastic, it wasn't all weepy and heartfelt but more of a spirited wham-bam "fuck-yeah" kick in the teeth kind of retort, with some thank yous and gratitude to her family.  And then to watch the reaction that EVERYONE in the room had to HER passionate poignant words and actions, was enough to lift me right out of my own chair and cheer with delight. I've been drinking the Kool Aid Frances McDormand has been serving up for at least 22 years, (Fargo 1996), and my hope is this: if she hadn't yet, then perhaps she has won you over now.

Of course her goal in life seems to be anything BUT caring about winning you over, but I do think she is so brave and smart, honest, open and fearless, I just want my kids and my friends and most of all my own self to be inspired not only by her words but by her passion, strength and actions.  After last night's simple gesture of having ALL of the women in the room nominated for an Oscar stand with her to be applauded, was like a Gospel church performance of Amazing Graze.  Her whooping and uncontrollable excitement was also an awkward thing of beauty.  I can't explain how inspired I am by how much she truly doesn't care about what people think of her because it seems to free her to be one of the greatest actors in Hollywood.

But this isn’t the only reason we love her.  In an era of female empowerment she’s a truly independent spirit that wants to be judged purely on her artistic merit.  She thinks from the head and projects at tilt speed and doesn't look back.

Thank you and congratulations Frances McDormand, there is no one else quite like you.
