November 2, 1999: Foo Fighters Release ‘There Is Nothing Left To Lose’

Transition and uncertainty are both exciting and terrifying, and without a doubt, those were two common themes during the making of the Foo Fighters’ third studio album, There Is Nothing Left To Lose.

After the success of 1997’s The Colour And The Shape, the Foos went through multiple changes, with the biggest being the departure of guitarist Franz Stahl, who replaced Pat Smear, and leaving Capitol Records.  Instead of recording in Los Angeles, the band moved their recording operation to the basement of Dave Grohl’s new home in Virginia, where the band recorded on *gasp* actual tape and not via any digital software.

It’s obvious that these elements led to incredible creativity, and the payoff was equally awesome.

There Is Nothing Left To Lose netted the Foos their first Grammy for Best Rock Album and would eventually be certified Platinum by the RIAA.  The album also birthed three absolutely incredible videos, most notably “Learn To Fly,” which features the Foos in multiple roles on a flight from hell and proved two things:  1.  Grohl dressed as an awkward teenage girl is kinda adorable and 2.  Taylor Hawkins’ flight attendant character was kinda hot, which might be owed to the prosthetic breasts he was wearing.

However, we’ll leave that up to you to decide.
